Abraham Lake Ice Report - January 1, 2025

Updated: 3 days ago

A cold spell means changes are happening at Abraham Lake. Ice has begun to form between the dam and Windy Point but it is very thin and should be avoided. Note that unless you have extensive ice safety knowledge, we never recommend this area throughout the winter due to steep banks and the possibility of open gaps in the ice close to shore.

We still have completely open water between Windy Point and north of Preachers Point.

Preacher's Point remains the only section of Abraham Lake that has ice thick enough to safely walk on with well over 20 cm. As the water level drops, getting down and back up the steep banks is getting more and more challenging. Try to find the lowest angled ice and use traction devices. The ice is now either sitting on land or in the river channel, and areas of weak ice and open water are growing (check our last update for pictures). Despite these challenging conditions there are some amazing patches of ice bubbles to be found if you know how to assess ice and are willing to explore a bit.

Some great patches of bubbles to be found around Preacher's Point.
